Introduction to Canoeing and Water Safety

This course is intended for the beginner or novice canoer who wants to learn the basic skills and strokes necessary to go out on their own or with family to enjoy a recreational canoe trip on a calm lake or river. Instructors will teach the basic canoe strokes, in addition to how to select equipment, identify and avoid hazards on the water, safety procedures for paddling, how to enter and exit a boat from shore and from a dock, and how to manage wind and waves.

Setting: outside, please dress appropriately for weather and also bring a bathing suit, sunscreen, water.

Effort level: low to moderate, with few instances of harder paddling throughout the course.

Duration: 2 hours

All necessary equipment is provided by ORCC.

Please note our cancellation policy:

- 2 weeks prior to the start of the program will receive a full refund less a $15 non-refundable administration fee.

- less than 2 weeks to the start of the program will be issued a credit only. However, you can always reschedule for another session or receive full credit towards other programs.
