Regatta Ready Programs

Are you looking for a challenge? If yes, then the Regatta Ready camp programs are for you!

Regatta Ready camps are a great complement to the Canoe Kids Camps, as paddlers, aged 8 to 14 years, build on their paddling skills and have the opportunity to compete at regional regattas.  Campers will enjoy spending their days in and on the water learning paddling skills in sprint canoe, sprint kayak, war canoe and dragon boat in a fun environment.  Campers can sign up for one week or multiple weeks.  For multi-week participants the program is designed to be a progressive summer program that nurtures our athletes in their development.

FUNdamentals Day Camps (Ages 8-14):

  • These are 1 week camps for new paddlers; campers can sign up for multiple weeks.
  • Paddlers are encouraged (not required) to race at the divisional regatta held on Saturday at the end of their camp week (see regatta table below).  There is no additional cost to racing at the weekend regatta if this is your first regatta, and it's a non-championship regatta.
  • On weeks when there is not a divisional regatta there will be a fun regatta at Ottawa River on the Friday afternoon to end camp.
  • Parents are encouraged to come out Friday afternoon to watch their children demonstrate their new skills and maybe even teach their parents a thing or two.

Learn-to-Train Camps (Ages 8-14):

  • These are 1 week camps for paddlers who have some sprint paddling experience.
  • Paddlers will build upon the skills they learned from previous summers of paddling.
  • Paddlers are expected to race at the divisional regatta at the end of their 1 week (see regatta table below).  If this is your ONLY regatta of the summer, AND it is a non-championship regatta, there is no additional charge to racing on the weekend.
  • On weeks when there is not a divisional regatta there will be a fun regatta at Ottawa River on the Friday afternoon to end camp.
  • Athletes may sign up for multiple weeks and work towards competing at Divisional and Provincial championships if that is their goal.
  • The focus is on team spirit as the campers represent the ORCC at regional regattas organized by the Eastern Ontario Division of Canoe Kayak Canada (see regatta table below).

Train to Train Sprint Program (Ages 13-15):

  • This is a summer-long competitive program beginning in May.
  • Athletes train 2-3 times per day (July & August) on and off-water in a non-day camp format (athletes are welcome to stay on site from 8:30 am until 4 pm).
  • Expectation is that athletes will compete at local regattas, and Divisional and Provincial Championships during the summer (see regatta table below).

Bus Service:

ORCC has once again joined forces with the YM-YWCA Camp to offer bus service to our day camps which are adjacent to each other on the Ottawa River.  Bus pickup/ drop off is available all over the City of Ottawa. For more information on bus routes and costs please click here:

Hours of Operation:

Regular camp hours, for drop-off and pick-up, are 8:45 am to 4:00 pm, Monday through Friday.
ORCC also provides optional early drop-off and late pick-up supervision by camp counselors. For a fee of $30 per camper per week, campers can be dropped off at 8:00 am and picked up by 5:00 pm

Descriptions of the Regatta Events:

  • July 4 Gananoque Club Regatta (U10-U14)  this is the traditional Gananoque Canoe Club regatta, which focuses on fun and learning how to race for new and more experienced athletes under the age of 14.  This location has a great viewing location for parents, so come out and cheer on our athletes.
  • July 11th Carleton Place Canoe Club Regatta (U10-U14) this is the yearly Carleton Place regatta, which also focuses on fun and learning how to race for new and experienced athletes under the age of 14.  This regatta site has excellent viewing options, and a perfect area to have a picnic while watching the races.
  • July 18th North Bay Canoe Club Regatta (U10-U14) this is our first overnight away regatta in North Bay.  It is intended for U10-U14 athletes.  At this regatta athletes get to practice some longer distance races, while they also have fun staying the night in a hotel with their teammates and families.
  • August 8-9 Eastern Ontario Division Championships (U10-U14) at the Rideau Canoe Club in Ottawa will offer events for all of our campers. It is also the Eastern Ontario Division Qualifying event for athletes wanting to compete at the Provincial Championships in Ottawa the following weekend.
  • August 16 Ontario Championship, at the Welland International Flat Water Centre is the Provincial Championship for U12-U14 athletes who qualified at the EOD Championships.
  • August 24 Eastern Ontario Division U12 Fun Regatta at Petrie Island Canoe Club in Orleans will be a fun filled day of racing for all U12 and under athletes.

In addition to the regular regattas, ORCC will be participating in 2 U12 regattas hosted by the Rideau Canoe Club (July 26th and Aug. 9th).  These regattas are for athlete's who are U12 and under only and the focus will be on fun and developing canoe and kayak skills.

General Information:

  • Campers are responsible for their own transportation to and from the regattas; usually there is an opportunity to car-pool with other parents. ORCC does provide the boats, life jackets and coaches for the regattas. Please ask a coach at the club for more information.
  • Safety is important to our club and all campers will undergo a swim assessment on their first day of camp that includes swimming 50 meters and treading water. This assessment allows our counselors to determine each campers comfort level in and around the water.  No camper will be turned away due to swim ability as ALL campers, regardless of swim ability, are required to wear a Government of Canada Approved Personal Flotation Device while on or near the water. Realizing that our participants have varying swimming abilities, the ORCC recommends that all paddlers strive to attain a progressive swim competency following the Red Cross Swim Kids program.
